In those days, and for some time after,
giant Nephilim lived on the earth,
for whenever the Sons of God had intercourse with women,
they gave birth to children who became the heroes
and famous warriors of ancient times.
-The Bible; Book of Genesis, chapter 6, verse 4

Nature: Known in biblical mythology as a race of man born from the crossbreeding of humans and angels.
Soundtrack: Perfect Day - Many artists (Lou Reed)

First notable appearance: 5,4 "Grapes of Sorrow'': When visiting the fabled lost city Iram of the Pillars the security installations and the libraries not only identified the leadership, the royal bloodline and its extended family, as ''Nephilim''. At least one of the clockwork 'robots' claimed that Nobel was one of its masters, and actively deferred to him as a result of thinking he was of that lineage.

Info: The meaning of the word 'Nephilim' is hotly debated by scholars, but many think that it probably derives from the Hebrew root "to fall", which also includes "to make [someone] to fall", "cause of [the/a] fall", or even "to kill, to ruin", while others take it as "fallen ones", "apostates". In the end, many translations of the bible simply replace it with ''giants'', following the tradition which interprets them as one of the tribes of monstrously large people which the Hebrews fought with (of which Goliath and his kin are the most famous example).

In both accepted church canon and orthodox Judaic scriptural interpretation, as well as biblical apocrypha and pseudepigrapha (such as the Book of Jubilees and the Book of Enoch), it's stated that the Deluge, the world-ending flood which Noah survived in his ark, was inflicted specifically in order to wipe the earth clean of Nephilim influence and taint. Interestingly, Genesis 6:4 implies that they have inhabited the earth in at least two different time periods: in pre-flood times "and afterward."

The Book of Enoch identifies their celestial parents, the ''Sons of God'', as grigori/egregori, ''the Watchers'', and states that the instigator who convinces the other 'watchers' to mingle with humanity and inevitably produce offspring with them, was none other than Shemyaza. According to these texts, the fallen angels who begat the Nephilim were cast into a place of 'total darkness'. However, Jubilees also states that God granted ten percent of the disembodied spirits of the Nephilim to remain after the flood, as demons, to try to lead the human race astray (through idolatry, the occult, etc.) until the final Judgment.

Noted scholar J. C. Greenfield proposes that the tale of the Nephilim in Genesis 6 is based on some of the negative aspects of the 'apkallu' tradition of ancient sumeria. The apkallu (sages) were seven in number, legendary culture-heroes from before the Flood, of human descent, but possessing extraordinary wisdom from the gods. Especially since one of these Seven Sages, named 'Adapa', was therefore called "son of Ea (god)", despite his human origin. The tradition of the Seven Sages became widespread in the 2nd and 1st millennia BC, and so may have been incorporated into judeo-christian folklore as the story of the Nephilim.

The Black Book, Page 107:

It was not long until love grew between the two peoples, and soon the Watchers gave unto their people many sons and daughters, fruit of their union. Yet these were children of the Watchers and partook in the might and glory of that lineage, tall and handsome and healthy, with both keen minds and the inner spark inherent in their blood besides. These were called the Fallen Ones, for they were from the Watchers the first ones of their kind born in that place, and this name also meant Wondrous, for so did their families consider them.
and soon above Dyeus, Phter of the Elohim, saw that the tribe of the Fallen Ones flourished, and knew it as Transgression. Then said he unto Metatron, highest of his Daeva: "This cannot be, for the Watchers have given unto Mankind secrets which are Ours alone, and in mingling their blood they let mortals have what they should not, and one day they will seek to be like unto us. What should come were they to share also the fruit of the tree of Life, making man to live forever?" And so he bade the Elohim to send a great Deluge, for to wipe out the Fallen Ones and their peoples unto the last child

The Holy Bible, Book of Genesis, Chapter 6:

1. And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them,

2. The sons of God saw that the daughters of other humans were Good. So they married any woman they'd chosen.

3. Then the lord said, "My Spirit will not put up with humans for such a long time, for they are only mortal flesh. In the future, their normal lifespan will be no more than 120 years."

4. In those days, and for some time after, giant Nephilim lived on the earth, for whenever the Sons of God had intercourse with women, they gave birth to children who became the heroes and famous warriors of ancient times.

5. The lord observed the extent of human wickedness on the earth, and he saw that everything they thought or imagined was consistently and totally evil.

6. So the lord was sorry he had ever made mankind and put them on the earth. It broke his heart.

7. And the lord said, "I will wipe this human race I have created from the face of the earth. Yes, and I will destroy every living thing — all the people, the large animals, the small animals that scurry along the ground, and even the birds of the sky. I am sorry I ever made them."

11. Now God saw that the earth had become corrupt and was filled with violence.

12. And God looked upon the earth, and, behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted his way upon the earth.

13. So God said to Noah, "I have decided to destroy all living creatures, for they have filled the earth with violence. Yes, I will wipe them all out along with the earth!

17. "Look! I am about to cover the earth with a flood that will destroy every living thing that breathes. Everything on earth will die!''

(Gry/Skadi: "Wow. That's the most epic of rage-quits!")

From "The Atlantis Encyclopedia", by Frank Joseph, The Career Press Inc., 2005, page 200:

Described in the Old Testament as a fallen race of giants, they ruled the world before the Great Flood, which obliterated their power. Their descendants, the Emin, “a people great, and many, and tall” (Deuteronomy 2:11), were also known as the Rephaim or Anakim, who perpetuated pre-deluge religious practices atop a sacred mountain, Seir.

In the Tales of Iram

We dug up ancient records from the dire days after the deluge, back when the few survivors were scraping together the dregs which in time was transformed into our society.

In their rejection of the corruption and arrogance which had poisoned the Creators the first three generations of our people had expunged as much as they could about their hated progenitors and their teachings from whatever recordings they had managed to scavenge from the ruination outside.

Yet some few remnants were spared, for they pertained to the lore imparted by the Eternal One, and in those days there were many who believed she alone of all the Creators had not forsaken them. That she had not sinned against our people, but that her actions had not been strong enough to count since she had stood alone, or else that she had been forcibly restrained, imprisoned or executed by the petty younger Gods, as punishment for her attempts to disobey, to aid the Sons and Daughters.

In all the ages of man which have passed since those primordial times have we ever sought to grow greater, have we ever advanced without complacency in art and literature and alchemy and artifice. But ever has their greatness loomed over our works, making us to live in the eternal shadow of their remembered glory. We are forever the Sons and the Daughters of the Observers, Children of Those Who Scrutinize, sub-creations of the Passive Analysts, forever their lessers.

By our own hand have we crafted our downfall: Where our ancestors faced extinction from flood, and where religious tracts speak endlessly of an escathon of fire in the Day of Judgement, our end is in the present, and it came to our lands in the nature of relentless sand and earth, covering all.

The Supremacy Wars
From the unformed wastes beyond the borders of creation did she come forth, and spake unto them:

«I am of the kind of your Creators, yea, even of their very bloodline besides, though not counted among the shining captains of the twenty tribes but of lowly enough stature that I may walk upon the base earth and speak with ye of the clay-born in the flesh. And it is for the purpose of flesh that I now find myself among you, for though many moons have passed (as your now-mastered lore tells you) since last the Holy Creators deigned to allow ye mud-men into their presence I have come unto thine dwelling-places instead.»

«As it were of old I will take into me the worship of that mate I choose from within the ranks of the Tribes of the Beloved, and through its blending with the power of my blood will I bring forth a new line of Great Ones, as superior to the Nephilim as are ye Fallen above the lowly slave in the forsaken wastelands beyond this world. These shall be as Kings of all your people, as in the City».

From before there was already contention as to whether she was really of the Creators, whether her tale of being sent by Those Above to usher in a new Age was truth or falsehood, but now there were some who took up their blades and cried that they alone deserved to bring forth the next race of Man. Had not their makers taught them the makings of blade and shield? Was this not a sign that the Nephilim should do great battle, and in so doing prove whose blood were the best among them?

Many there were who saw this as folly, or madness, but when they prayed to their Makers for guidance and Wisdom there was no reply to be had (…)

Village turned on village, brother fought with brother, and soon all the twenty tribes were embroiled in a war which engulfed the entire Second World. Each battled valiantly to prove the rightness of his thoughts, and as the years passed the immaculate silence from the Makers was taken as an obvious sign that they silently approved of these affairs, doing naught to curb them at all.
